Det Nødvendige Seminarium

This page describes the status of the teacher training programme offered at the Necessary Teacher Training College ("Det Nødvendige Seminarium"), Tvind, and possibilities of employment of teachers trained at that college.

Introduction

The teacher training programme offered at the Necessary Teacher Training College does not receive any kind of government subsidy – neither towards the operational expenditure of the college nor for the students in the form of grants and loans from the Danish State Education Grant and Loan Scheme (SU).

The programme aims at training teachers to teach the 1st to 10th form levels, i.e. primary and lower secondary education. Employment as teachers in upper secondary education is thus not possible.

It is moreover necessary to distinguish between employment in the Danish "Folkeskole" (municipal primary and lower secondary school) and employment in private schools.

Employment in the "Folkeskole"

1. Teachers admitted to the Necessary Teacher Training College in 1988 or earlier:

Under normal circumstances, these students should have completed their education in 1992 at the latest, but some have only completed it in 1993 or 1994. These teachers have received their training during a period when the programme was subject to supervision by the Ministry of Education, among other things through ministry-appointed external examiners, and their education is therefore comparable with that of teachers trained at the Danish State colleges of education or at approved private colleges of education, and they may in the same way as teachers from the mentioned colleges seek employment in the Danish "Folkeskole".

2. Teachers admitted to the Necessary Teacher Training College in 1988 or later:

The programme offered since 1988 is not an officially recognised programme in Denmark.

Employment at private institutions

No official recognition is necessary for teachers who seek employment at private institutions, e.g. private schools (but not their possible upper secondary departments), continuation schools, free elementary schools, folk high schools etc.
